Before taking flight, Daedalus urged his son to fly midway between the sun and the sea, warning, “If you fly too low, the sea’s mist will dampen the feathers; if you fly too high, the sun’s heat will melt the wax that binds your wings.” Exhilarated by the power of flight, Icarus ignored his father's warnings and flew too close to the sun, which melted his wings and caused him to fall to his death.
